Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP)

Program Overview

The ELOP program is operated at all BUSD Elementary Schools and will expand to include only 6th grade at the middle school upon family interest.

BUSD receives funding for the After School Expanded Learning Programs from the California Department of Education;  Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P).  BUSD partners with the Academy to coordinate and operate ELOP at the elementary schools.

The California Department of Education (CDE) has identified specific requirements for districts implementing Extended Learning Programs. These requirements and district priorities are:

  • When combined with the instructional day, the program must provide a 9 hour day for students.

  • The program must offer enrichment opportunities that engage students and that are based on student interests.

  • To qualify for ELOP, the student must be a part of our unduplicated count, which includes students in Transitional Kindergarten through grade 6 who are English learners, foster youth, homelessness, or those who qualify for free or reduced lunch. (Income based)

  • If you believe your family may qualify, please complete the free and reduced lunch application (Education Benefits form) located on the food services website starting July 1st 2024 for the 2024-25 school year  and submit the form to our food services department.

  • The program must be offered at each school site.

  • You must re-enroll every year to be a part of the ELOP program.

Four Major Components

1. Academic Support: The academic component supports academic success by creating links to classroom learning by offering homework support, small group or individual tutoring, and mentoring.

2. Enrichment Opportunities: The enrichment component offers both traditional and non-traditional activities designed to build knowledge and enhance creative expression.

3. Recreational Activities: We encourage personal growth through competitive and non-competitive sports by building teamwork and a healthy competitive spirit, developing relationships, and having fun.

4. Community Building: The Expanded Learning programs foster a sense of community among students with a youth development model with a focus on serving the social-emotional needs of students.
